21.Brief artistic biography


  • 1937             He was born in 1937 in Omsk, to a family of painters  
  • 1951-1956    Studied at the  Moscow V.I.Surikov Art School
  • 1953              His watercolors first published in  "Pioneer" Magazine.
  • 1954              Began showing his work in  art exhibitions.
  • 1956-1962    Studied at the Moscow   V.I.Surikov National Art Institute
  • 1962-1974    Worked as a policeman, a hospital, a theater fire safety officer.
  • 1974-1980    Created a series of drawings titled "Autographs of War”
  • 1974              Admitted to the Moscow Artists Union
  • 1978-1981    Focused on  lithographs, etchings and portraiture.
  • 1981-1982    Created  "А farewell look."
  • 1982-1986    Created "Delusion of persecution."
  • 1987               Awarded the "Struggle for Peace” medal for "Autographs of War".
  • 1989-2001    Traveled extensively to Afghanistan. Based on his experiences, created series "A Prayer for Peace."
  • 1992-2006    Created "Communal Apartment Memories».
  • 1994-2000    Visited former Nazi concentration camps. Created the series "Requiem".
  • 1996              He  was awarded the title "Honorary Artist of the Russian Federation" for  "Requiem”
  • 1997             "Autographs of War” nominated for the Russian   Federation National Prize
  • 1999-2004    Trips to the  124th  Laboratory  in Rostov-on-Don. Created the series of drawings  "International Terrorism” 
  • 2002-2004    Created the series "The Mentally Ill of Russia."
  • 2003              He  was awarded the title of "Honorary Master of Arts of the Russian Federation” for "A Prayer for Peace".
  • 2004             "Requiem," "Autographs of War", "A Prayer for Peace", "International  Terrorism" and  "The Mentally Ill of Russia"
                          were combined into the series "LISTS of SORROW".
                          He was awarded  the Diploma of the Russian Academy of Arts
                          for a series of  easel  painting from the  "LISTS of SORROW" series.
  • 2004             Two trips to Grozny. Created a series of drawings "I Loved this City."
  • 2008             Trip to New York for the opening of a one man exhibition
                         "Sketches in  Memory of Holocaust Victims and their Liberators " at the UN headquarters.
  • 2008             "Requiem" exhibited at Endicott College in Massachusetts.
  • 2008             September-   October.  A trip to the destroyed Tskhinvali.
                          Created the series "The South Ossetia Tragedy."
  • 2009             Worked on the series "Repentance" at the St. Gennady Monastery 
                          the   Yaroslavl Region and the on the  Solovki  Islands .
  • 2010             He  was awarded  the honorary title "People's Artist of the Russian   Federation” 
  • 2011             He was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts
  • 2011             He died at  the First Municipal Hospital on March 15th  after a serious illness.
                          He was buried at the Vagankovskoye Cemetery.


Gennady Dobrov participated in 68 art exhibitions
(Moscow-based, regional, one-man, all-Union and international).
He has more than 350 publications and works in the media.
His works hang in the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945, 
the Central History Museum and the Karlshorst  Surrender  Museum in Berlin.
